Things were buzzing this week at our Sea Terminal in Ghent, where three vessels were handled in quick succession—each with a different cargo and destination. A great showcase of how Transferium delivers efficient, flexible, and sustainable bulk logistics every day.
Vessel 1: optimisation at its best
The first seagoing vessel arrived with 5,000 tonnes of olive cake from Spain, a by-product used in the animal feed industry. Once unloaded, the ship was reloaded with 3,000 tonnes of wood chips bound for Scandinavia. This clever reuse of capacity avoids empty runs and maximises efficiency—a textbook example of smart waterborne logistics.
Vessel 2: clinker for construction
A second seagoing vessel delivered 7,000 tonnes of cement clinker, a key ingredient in cement production. Part of the cargo was immediately transferred to trucks for transport, while the rest was stored safely in our covered bulk storage facility for future distribution.
Inland barge: local sand, on the move
Closer to home, an inland barge and pusher arrived with 4,000 tonnes of Belgian sand. This load was quickly transferred to trucks for further delivery across the region.
A multimodal logistics hub in action
With a combination of seagoing vessels, inland shipping, trucks, and flexible storage, Transferium functions as a multimodal logistics hub for bulk cargo. Thanks to our strategic location in Ghent, direct waterway access, and well-coordinated operations, we’re able to handle large volumes efficiently and sustainably.
