River Terminal Roeselare Saves 464 Trucks on the Road

A recent Transferium initiative at River Terminal Roeselare has achieved a remarkable reduction in environmental impact by taking the equivalent of 464 trucks off the road.

This success was achieved by efficiently moving 13,000 tonnes of soil from a construction project in Roeselare to Ghent and Komen. The soil was first transported just 3 kilometres by road to the terminal, then it went by water to its final destinations, significantly reducing CO2 emissions by 68% while reducing road traffic.

At the terminal in Roeselare, the soil was also sieved and 500kg of stones were removed. Initially, transporting this amount of soil from Roeselare to both final destinations would result in 464 truckloads.

Strategic location

River Terminal Roeselare, a major logistics centre financed with over six million euros by POM West Flanders and De Vlaamse Waterweg, already has modern facilities such as two weighbridges, office containers, and specially equipped dumping bays. With a 230-metre-long quay wall and 18,000 square metres of storage space, the terminal is optimal. ‘We are currently looking at an extension for responding to the demand for additional covered storage facilities’ said Nicola Samyn.

Modal shift

Despite the wider economic downturn in the sector, a recent project demonstrates the terminal's potential environmental and business efficiency impact.

‘This modal shift to inland shipping not only illustrates our ability to operate efficiently within the logistics landscape, but also highlights our commitment to environmental responsibility,’ underlines Nicola Samyn, CEO of Transferium. ‘We offer a total solution for companies looking to minimise their logistics footprint.’

With a focus on sustainable growth, we expect a significant increase in over and storage activities at the terminal, supported by improved economic conditions and with respect for the environment.
